blown glass, hand blown   Blown Glass

A few years ago I had the chance to see someone creating hand blown glass art. One of the local collages has an arts and crafts program. The program is broken into ceramics, textiles, glass work and photography. Twice a year the college has a market night where people can buy some of the students art work.

One night the teacher for the glass program was demonstrating the art of making hand blown glass pieces. It was quite interesting. They had those of us just watching to the side. It would not do for one of us to get in the way. Blowing glass is not easy, and can be dangerous. The heat used to create hand blown glass is quite hot. One lady made a glass vase. She used several different colors. It was fun to see how they blended and changed as she blew and rolled the piece. The best piece was the glass goblet the teacher made. That took some real skill. He pointed out that goblets are very rarely made by hand anymore. It was a very interesting and entertaining demonstration of the skill it takes to make glass pieces by hand.
